Dr. Nader Chalfoun, Ph.D., LEED AP©, CEA, is a Professor of Architecture and Environmental Sciences at the College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture of the University of Arizona. Received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona’s Arid Lands Resource Sciences program in 1989, Master of Architecture from the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture in 1985, and a Bachelor of Architecture from Cairo University College of Engineering, Architecture Department in 1972. He is a LEED© Accredited professional active in the U.S. Green Building Council. He is the chair of the Master's of Science in Architecture program and he is regionally and internationally recognized for his work on building energy efficiency and energy performance modeling. His research and teaching includes courses, seminars and design studios that focus on the environment including sustainable green building design, building technologies, energy conservation and passive solar architecture, design for health and well-being, and methods for assessing thermal comfort conditions in outdoor spaces. He developed many energy and environment related software including MRT an outdoor thermal comfort simulation model. He developed and directs the DOE awarded "Best Energy Education" House Energy Doctor Program at the University and teaches a course sequence to graduate and undergraduate architects and engineers students on building energy efficiency and integrate the knowledge into the curriculum. Dr. Chalfoun has published widely nationally and internationally several papers, journal articles, text and electronic books on sustainability and energy efficient design and the solar energy arena. He was awarded many national and federal grants. He designed environmentally focused projects around the world and served on various local and international committees. He has one patent, several teaching and research awards and two professional registrations. Dr. Chalfoun is previous owner of a prominent architectural consulting and services firm overseas. He was also a prime contributor to Tucson's Sustainable Energy Standard and the first Arizona Pima County net-zero energy code. Professor Chalfoun has been recently awarded the “Legend in Energy” title from the Association of Energy Engineers.
