Innovative Projects in Energy Grants

Submission Deadline has passed. Proposals are in review.

The Institute for Energy Solutions (IES), within the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR) and the Office for Research, Innovation and Impact (RII), is offering Innovative Projects in Energy Grants to increase UArizona’s competitiveness in the federal funding landscape. The clean energy transition and decarbonization is considered a major priority, which targets the Biden administration’s goals to advance renewable, clean energy solutions by 2050. Proposed projects will help achieve federal goals of lowering costs and expanding renewable energy solutions to new markets, and will be supported by funds from the Technology Research Initiative Fund (TRIF) Water, Environmental and Energy Solutions (WEES) Initiative.

This internal initiative seeks to fund up to 5 multidisciplinary teams at the $40,000-$75,000 level for 6 months (January 1, 2024 – June 30, 2024), contingent on performance and meeting proposed milestones. These short-term, accelerated projects are for teams with a clear vision of upcoming funding opportunities and programmatic advances. Successful projects will be eligible to apply for an anticipated second round of funding planned to run July 1, 2024-June 30, 2025, assuming clear delineation of projects and advanced vision.

Energy Snapshot: DOE Funding Calls in Broad Set of Clean Energy Topics

Since the last energy snapshot, DOE released four funding opportunities related to methane gas releases measurement and mitigation, bio-refineries, electric vehicle charging for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and the annual EPSCoR funding call. DOE is also about to release another three funding calls related to quantum computing, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies and a solar manufacturing incubator.

To develop future funding solicitations, DOE is seeking input on research priorities for carbon harvesting, superhot geothermal power and its AI initiative—Frontiers in AI for Science, Security, and Technology (FASST).
