After finishing my B.E. and M.E., both in industrial and systems engineering (ISE), I worked in the Mexican power system industry for over 6 years, managing projects in small-scale (from 1 to 5 MW) and large-scale (from 100 to 600MW). My previous background in ISE allowed me to focus clearly on the objectives and overcome the multidisciplinary challenges presented. However, this experience also make me realize that the old (more than 50 years old power grid) and complex (due intermittent renewable and distributed resources) electrical energy system is unreliable to failures due to natural causes and intelligent adversaries. Such failures also have negative effects on the interconnected systems such as water and natural gas. This is one of the reasons I decided to enroll in a PhD and dedicate my research to this topic.
