What is AZSEC?
AzSEC is an annual student conference on renewable energy science, technology and policy. The conference welcomes graduate students and post-docs from ASU, UA, and NAU to share their own research, learn about and discuss cutting-edge research through presentations, posters, and discussions. This conference is a prime opportunity for peer networking and ideas exchange!
AzSEC is supported and attended by industry leaders and University faculty who are accessible to talk with during panels, round-table discussions, and the big evening mixer and poster session.

What will it cost to attend?
AZSEC will cover the cost of a double occupancy sleeping room, meals and conference-associated tours.
Can I attend just 1 day of the conference?
Considering the collaborative group work at this years conference it is preferred that you commit to all three days.

Each poster submission that is accepted to the conference will be allowed to present 1-2 slides and a timed 1-2 minutes presentation (a.k.a. "lightening round" or "elevator speech") that will summarize their poster. The goal is to give an energetic presentation that will convince the audience to stop by and view the poster.
How do I get into Fast Pitch?
1. The AZSEC Committee will review and select student conference attendees based on their individual or team Abstract submitted by the September 30th deadline.
2. Students whose abstracts are selected will be notified by mid-October and asked to submit Fast Pitch slides.
3. A template for the slides and instructions will be sent with the acceptance email.
4. Student attendees will submit their slide to the AZSEC website no later than TBA
5. Each poster team will decide who will present the Fast Pitch
6. Presentations will be judged on content and delivery.
7. Winners will be announced at the Thursday evening dinner.
8. Awards will be disbursed approximately two weeks after the conference
IMPORTANT! All UNIVERSITY ATTENDEES MUST FILL OUT A TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION FORM WITH THEIR HOME DEPARTMENT PRIOR TO THE CONFERENCE
What are the options for traveling to the conference?
ASU & NAU students: vans transportation will be arranged with each university. Please indicate your travel needs on the registration form and look for details from your university coordinator.
You may travel in your personal vehicle and/or carpool with other students. A limited number of students can qualify for a mileage reimbursement (rate determined by individual schools)
Please indicate your interest in carpool travel on the conference registration.
Conference Accommodations - 2018
Attendees will stay at the Biosphere 2 casitas on the property. Some rooms are furnished with twin beds, some have bunk beds. ...all will have a bed!
Student attendees are strongly encouraged to share rooms between two people. If you know of another student with whom you can share a room please indicate their name on your registration form. Otherwise, the conference will assign a roommate. The conference will not pay for other hotels. If a student reserves a room and opts to not attend the conference or stays elsewhere and does not cancel the room within the cancelation date, the student will be responsible for paying the room charges.
What are the accommodations like?
The facilities of the B2 Conference & Retreat Center comprise a Campus Village of 28 rustic Santa Fe-style casitas with a total of 103 guestrooms. Complete with kitchens, living areas, and internet access, the 3-5 bedroom casitas provide the perfect place to unwind and socialize in-between or after meetings
Students are asked to share double occupancy rooms. If you have a particular conference attendee you would like to room with, please indicate their name on your registration. The room will be paid for by your University. If you make a room reservation and do not attend and fail to cancel your room reservation, you will be asked to reimburse your university for the cost of that room ($79 ++/night) The Conference will not pay for other hotels without prior approval.
Are there accommodations for attendees with disabilities?
Yes. Biosphere 2 has ADA certified rooms – please contact your university's coordinator
Is there wireless on campus and in the hotel?
The Biosphere 2 campus is completely wireless.
What is the dress code?
Attire for the conference is business casual.
What else should I pack?
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Casual wear for off-conference time
- Light jacket - it can be slightly chilly in the evening
Activities and Events
Will there be networking opportunities?
YES! This year AZSEC is featuring a Keynote Speaker and Dinner on Wednesday, Nov 7th .
The AZSEC features a (judged) FAST PITCH competition and INDUSTRY SPONSORED DINNER on Thursday evening from 6p-8p. Bring your contact cards!
Will there be any organized Conference excursions?
Wednesday night: 8pm, TBD
Thursday morning: guided nature walk, 7am
Thursday night: TBA: Star Gazing, 8pm
Friday afternoon: 1-3pm, tour of Biosphere 2
What if I have special dietary needs?
Please note this in your registration. With advance notice, selected catering services is prepared to accommodate common dietary needs.
