Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Douglas A. Loy is a professor with a split appointments in the departments of materials science and engineering and chemistry and biochemistry. He is a fifth generation Arizonan and an alumnus of the University of Arizona (BS/Chemistry, 1983). He received an MS in chemistry from Northern Arizona University in 1986 and a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of California Irvine in 1991. Loy subsequently joined Sandia National Laboratories, becoming a distinguished member of technical staff before moving to Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2003 where he led the polymer and nanomaterials synthesis team in the Polymer and Coatings Group. In 2005 he joined the faculty at the University of Arizona where he has continued investigating fundamental and unconventional sol-gel chemistries, tetrazine polymer chemistry, new materials for energy storage, the chemistry of polysilsesquioxanes, and 3D printing of new materials.
